ReceptioGate and the Defence of Academic Integrity

For years, ReceptioGate was described as a controversy involving plagiarism and academic misconduct. The documentary evidence suggests a different interpretation. The affair developed in parallel with investigations concerning manuscript leaves removed from historic codices, the international market through which those leaves circulated, and the interests connected to that trade.

At the centre of the case are the leaves stolen from Turin manuscript E.V.5 and the leaf removed from the Antiphonary of Castelfiorentino. Their appearance on the market depended upon descriptions, catalogues, and expert opinions that omitted or obscured problematic provenance. When Professor Carla Rossi and the RECEPTIO research centre reported these matters to the Italian authorities in December 2022, a campaign of plagiarism allegations rapidly followed. The result was a public narrative that focused overwhelmingly on accusations against the whistleblower while leaving the underlying cultural-heritage issues largely unexplored. ReceptioGate therefore concerns not only manuscript dismemberment and provenance, but also the mechanisms through which attention was redirected away from those subjects.
